How does talk work?

If you are reading this then it’s a fair bet that you are a human. Being a human can be difficult but at least we have the unique gift of being able to talk about it. Life is complicated and sometimes it can seem that happiness and inner peace are just out of reach.

I believe that meaningful lives that are pleasurable and satisfying are our birthright. Lives blessed with rewarding interconnectons with other people are possible. This becomes easier to live out when we come home to our true identity.

Ah, but what about war and disease and betrayal and suffering and shame and regret and…… the list goes on.

Well life happens, and maybe we have less control than we hope about our circumstances. What we do have is control over is how we choose to respond to what happens.

Many of us have been inspired by the way some people seem to rise above adversity. Conversely, sometimes we are puzzled by the downfall of someone who appeared to ‘have it all’.  So are we winners or losers?

Maybe we all have the potential to win – in the particular way that is special to us.

The question then becomes: “What is special to me?” Perhaps the deeper question is: “Who am I?”

It sounds like a simple enough question doesn’t it? But it’s not so easy. Imagine if you asked yourself the question: “What do I look like?”

To answer that question you probably need to start with a mirror.

What kind of a mirror is needed to begin to answer the question “Who am I?”

Experience has shown that another person, ideally one who is dedicated to joining you on your search, can be an effective start.

It helps if they have had some proper training, adhere to a stringent ethical framework, work in a systematic way and are not part of your social circle.

We call them psychotherapists, and that’s how talk works.

Why do people come for therapy?

I can’t change them, but I can change me, and that would change it.
